Sun Zi’s Art of War – iOS App

Dec 15, 2012

This application contains the full text of the original Art of War by Sun Tzu (or Sun Zi). I have created this application for everyone who, like me, are interested in reading the Art of War in its original chinese version.

Because the Art of War was written in “old” text, many of the same characters that are still used in our modern times are actually pronounced differently, reading the art of war correctly then becomes even more of a challenge for non-native chinese speakers. This app addresses this problem by providing a convenient way of learning the pronunciation of the characters by just clicking on it.

I hope you’ll find this app useful for your learning :)

Chinese 365 – iOS App

March 8, 2012

Chinese 365 is a tool for building Chinese Vocabulary. It presents 365 practical vocabulary words that are used in daily life that the reader can gradually learn by learning one vocabulary word a day for 365 days (roughly one year, although you can read everything in a few days if you wish to do so :) ). The 365 vocabulary words presented in this app are not only useful in daily life, they are also the vocabulary words that one has to know when preparing for the Chinese Language Proficiency Test (HSK: Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì; 汉语水平考试; 漢語水平考試). This app contains pretty much all of vocabulary words for HSK Level 1 and HSK Level 2, and ‘some’ from HSK Level 3. Level 1 and 2 are the Beginner levels of the HSK. So this App helps in preparing you for the Beginner Level exams of the Chinese Proficiency Test.

Special Features:

1.) By tapping the vocabulary word for the day, the pronunciation of the vocabulary words will be played. This can be used as a guideline on how to properly pronounce the word.

2.) By tapping the example chinese sentences that uses the vocabulary words, the pronunciation of the individual words that make up the sentence will be played, which the reader can use as a guideline on how to pronounce the sentence properly.

3.) Care has been taken in the example sentences in a way that we have as much as possible used the words that have been introduced in the app.

4.) Vocabulary Words are presented in ‘both’ Simplified (as used in China) and Traditional (as used in Taiwan) Writing.

I hope that you may find this application as useful as I’ve envisioned it to be. If you have any suggestions or comments, please feel free to get in touch.

Chinese Phonetics – iOS App

Dec 15, 2011

This application was designed to be a very useful tool for anyone who wants to learn the Chinese Mandarin Language Phonetics. It does not limit the presentation of the Chinese Phonetics to either the Traditional (Zhuyin) Method or the Romanized (Pinyin) Method of writing the Chinese Phonetics. Instead, it presents both systems for the user to choose which Method/System he or she will find a better affinity with.

When learning the Chinese Language, proper pronunciation of the phonetics and the syllables of the language (which are composed of combination of phonetics) is often a challenge. This application addresses that challenge by providing a list of all the phonetics as well as a list of all of the combination of phonetics within the Chinese Language, that upon clicking the individual buttons within the list of Chinese Language Phonetics and Syllables, the proper pronunciation of the phonetics and syllables can be heard.

The final part of the application also provides a practice exercise section where the user can record his/her pronunciation and listen to his/her own pronunciation to compare with the pronunciation of the chinese native speaker.

I hope that you may find this application as useful as I’ve envisioned it to be. If you have any suggestions or comments, please feel free to get in touch.
